Many people never burnout, but there's no telling if you are in this category. So it can be said that everyone is at risk, true.

Looking at the list above I now think it was wishful thinking on my part that just changing teams can help. Dealing with burnout requires drastic measures, doing something I've never done before, and thinking that I could just continue working at the same building was a bit naive.

In hindsight I would try to lower the workload: take as much vacation as I could, move to a smaller/simpler project with faster iteration cycles and some travel maybe. There are some projects for emerging markets, for Africa and Asia, that could be a good fit.

I would also handle my communication with manager and director differently, try to avoid total breakdown of trust that happened. It came out of the blue, not something I expected and I was unprepared for it.

As for general advice for handling burnout - first of all you need to realise that it's happening. The drop in productivity may be slow and difficult to notice, but it is important to say "I am in a burnout. I need to deal with it".

Then you need to step back from whatever you were doing: continuing as before, trying to extract whatever productivity you have left by working more will just make things worse.

Think about what you wanted to do for a long time but there never was an opening to do it - travel, try things, do something crazy. If you can't work anyway - do something else instead.

It is also important to try to not give a shit. Your boss may say that you need to up your game, or your wife may say that we need money, or your friends may say that you are acting stupid etc. Don't give a shit, its your life, given to you to enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it - nobody around will.

“The further we reach, the closer we see”

“The further we reach, the closer we see” speaks to a notion that has existed since the dawn of documented human experiences:

the urge to have a greater understanding of our surroundings through indexing

the past, present, and future.

From geological sites, the study of the cosmos, to some of the earliest forms of “art” being the petroglyphs, humans have documented our

experiences in many forms and mediums throughout history, with the tools and systems advancing as time progresses and culture expands.

As we strive to better understand what we call “life”,

we are often asked to reach beyond what is in the forefront of our “view”

and instead be cognizant of what was, while considering what is to come.

While this time of not knowing is wholly unique to all the nuances of this moment, the uniqueness of any moment can in fact claim that. How I position myself in this series of paintings which began in 2014 explores my own inner realm as I enter into a new medium. leaning to paint after decades in alternative mediums gave me an opportunity to reflect back on how painters beginning in the late 1800's redefined the role of painting for the artist and the culture it would be viewed by. In the last century painters were able to way to develop processes which acknowledged vast areas of social concern.

We are on route to some of the most profound changes human evolution ever. With ubiquitous surveillance,  AI at our heels combined with late-stage capitalism our future is unimaginable. From concepts presented in George Orwells 1984, to Brave New World, We saw Dada arise as a result of the horrors of World War 1. Abstract expressionism come to it's height following WWII. There is much to learn from all of these creative views.

In this series of works understood as not for understanding... embedded in the work is the relationship to moving forward without knowing. The temptation is to slow things down allowing for more mindful engagement as well as to adjust things to a speed that allow the human mind to process.

We are beyond the speed of
